How do I put an operating system on a computer?

That depends on the operating system. Typically you would boot from a CD or DVD beside the installer on it.
put os disk in disk drive and follow on eyeshade instruction
Did you set the BIOS to boot to the CD first? If it go straight to the hard drive next you cant load the OS.

While the system boots it should speak Press XX to enter setup. Press the key it list and look for BOOT ORDER or PRIORITY. Make sure that the optical drive (CD/DVD) is in establish b4 the hard drive.
first two answers are correct however you may hold to edit your bios settings (press del to enter setup) or whioh ever knob it says press it get to advanced bios options and coppers the boot order to cd as first selection - youll need to shift this after youve installed it
Make sure your RAM sticks are in safe and sound.
I had this come up.

What I did was use win 98 boot disk (floppy) to return with into dos, then format-ed and (fdisk)to create a subdivision ion. then contained by dos, I ran setup.exe and installed 98, (it be the next day)

later installed (upgraded) to win xp.

(dos has the A:\)

to install=A:\ setup.exe

it worked for me,I don't know how to do it short a floppy drive-sorry
